The new Hawaiian Style Cafe

Tim LOVES himself a plate lunch. Like, loves it. And I, not so much. But since Tim humors me and comes with me to Pho Viet 4 days a week (best pho ever), sometimes I gotta give a little. This week we tried the new Hawaiian Style Cafe that just opened on Monono street. They have a location in Waimea that's super popular, but I've never tried.

Inside was HUGE.

Tim had a plate lunch (duh) of Kahlua pork cabbage and korean chicken.

I had the fish and chips.

I would maybe come back here for breakfast but not lunch. I felt so heavy afterward and just blech from the grease. And really, with Pho Viet being open six days a week why would you go anywhere else? I mean, really.

On a totally different note, lawmakers are making it so celebs in Hawaii can sue if y'all take their pictures on the beach. So you all can stop stalking me now, k? I WILL SUE YOU. (I do realize that I am not a celebrity, and I won't sue you.)

Pescatore

This past weekend we went out and tried Pescatore for the first time. My friend Paula suggested it and made sure that it would be open for Sunday brunch (because NOTHING is open in Hilo on Sundays). Apparently, Pescatore is sort of known FOR its Sunday brunch. It was packed. It looks sketchy from the outside, as most older buildings in downtown Hilo do, but inside it is lovely and very un-Hilo.

Paula opted for the fruit and cream filled crepes. She said they were yummy.

Um, what? Pasta for $6? Very Hilo. Very cool.

I can't go somewhere new and not get the eggs benedict.  Oh wait, I did that at Pauls Place. Well, whatever, the benedict was good here, though next time I'd order it without the canadian bacon. Too salty.

Tim got strawberry pancakes, and they were, well... strawberry pancakes.

They brought us fresh bread and it was gooooood.

Dad.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to probably the best man I've ever known!!!!!!!! My dad Timm!!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!

I think this might be my favorite picture of him, ever.

In other news, we finally tried Paul's Place in downtown Hilo. It's this TINY little hole in the wall and oh so cute. And I mean TINY. As in four tables. FOUR. And one of them is outside. It's run by this little Greek man names Paul who calls you young lady and young man over and over again. The portions are small but so fresh and clean. Tim had the yogurt parfait and I had the lox bagel. YUM.

This is SOOOOOO cool. I want one. But they're not being made yet.

And I'll leave you with this little beauty I found in the Science room the other day at Kea'au Middle School:

I LOVE the second from the bottom.

Saturday

I know I post about Hilo Coffee Mill ALL the time, but it's worth re-posting about over and over. I can't say enough how much we love this place. It's heaven. Coffee and chickens and baby chickens and eggs and pancakes and coffee and baby chickens and happiness and have I mentioned baby chickens???! Cuz they ALWAYS have baby chickens... everywhere! As soon as you park and open the door all you hear is "tweet tweet tweet". Those are some majorly happy chickens. AND we met the mother chicken lady who takes care of the 200 chickens... she came out and they all flocked to her and she speaks to them like babies. SO STINKIN' CUTE.

Saturday's are the best time to go. They have their very small farmers market, but offer fresh outdoor breakfasts. Super cheap, all organic, and it always includes fresh eggs from that very morning!

Super creepy chicken monkey. (I made up the chicken part)

Hamakua mushroom heaven.

BABY CHICKENS!!!!!! tweet tweet tweet tweet

And, just for a fun throwback... here is the very first picture I ever took of Tim. And that's Haley, mid-jello shot. Nice.

Oh, P.S. last night we rescued a rooster, and now we regret it big time.

Le Magic Pan and Randomness.

Why have we never tried Le Magic Pan before??? Maybe because it's practically hidden and away from the hustle of downtown Hilo, but OH MY GOD, delicious. Hilo's version of Renata's only way more stick up your butt.
And on that note, Tim woke up with grumpy pants on, even the lilikoi mimosa didn't help.
Putting these salt and pepper shakers into dirty positions lightened his mood.
As did the AMAZING crepes. I had the california: mushrooms, mozzarella, artichoke and LOVE.
Tim's been helping my dad a little with the Zoo Choo Train. Cute.
Like we would EVER want our coqui's to go away. We LOVE them.
